Salesforce buys Braze for Marketing Cloud teams: the call

Salesforce is paying $5.66 billion for Braze and has not said what happens to Marketing Cloud. The close is up to 467 days away. What does your next renewal look like?

The call

WATCH: do not re-platform between Marketing Cloud and Braze, and do not sign a long renewal on either, until Salesforce publishes a combined roadmap. A Marketing Cloud owner with a renewal due before February 2028 should act, with procurement in the room.

Salesforce agreed on 20 October to buy Braze for $47.50 a share in cash, about $5.66 billion in enterprise value, closing in its fiscal 2028 subject to Braze shareholder and regulatory approval (vendor, Salesforce). Braze shares rose more than 51% in premarket trading and Salesforce fell about 3% (independent, Benzinga). The offer is 58% over Braze’s 19 October close of $30.04 (independent, CMSWire).

What it is, and what it is not

What it is. Salesforce buying a cross-channel engagement platform: in-app messaging, content feeds, live updates, and AI decisioning on offers, channels, and timing, across mobile, web, email, SMS, and WhatsApp. Braze has about 2,770 customers, Canva, Instacart, and Venmo among them (vendor, Salesforce). Salesforce says Braze will strengthen Marketing Cloud’s cross-channel personalisation and connect to Data 360, Customer 360, Agentforce, and SIForce (vendor).

What it is not. It is not a product change you can plan against. The deal has not closed, Braze stays independent until it does, and there is no combined roadmap, no packaging, and no pricing (independent, CMSWire). Braze’s chief executive, Bill Magnuson, says “We’ll continue building as Braze” (vendor, via CMSWire). MarTech calls the Marketing Cloud fit “the company’s plan, not yet a demonstrated customer outcome” (independent, MarTech). Nor is it a guidance event: Salesforce says its fiscal 2027 guidance does not change (vendor).

The number nobody is quoting

Coverage leads with $5.66 billion and a 58% premium. The number a buyer needs is how long they run without an answer.

Sign a three-year Marketing Cloud or Braze renewal this quarter and up to 43% of it can run before the deal closes, let alone before a combined roadmap exists. The rest runs on a product plan nobody has written yet. The 361 large Braze accounts carry the most exposure, and they are exactly the accounts Salesforce will want on Marketing Cloud. Salesforce has done this before: ExactTarget became the base of Marketing Cloud, and Krux and Datorama were folded in (independent, CMSWire). Precedent is not a commitment.

Missing

What Salesforce and Braze have not said, as of 21 October:

  • A combined roadmap: which system owns journey orchestration, and whether Braze replaces or sits beside Marketing Cloud journeys.
  • Packaging and price for Marketing Cloud customers who want Braze, and for Braze customers who do not run Salesforce CRM.
  • Where the customer profile, consent, and suppression lists live: Data 360, Braze, or both.
  • Contract treatment at close: renewal caps, term changes, and whether Braze terms carry over.
  • Support commitments for Braze customers on non-Salesforce stacks, given the “open, composable” line.
  • Data residency, sub-processor, and data processing agreement changes once Braze sits inside Salesforce.
  • A target close date inside fiscal 2028, and which regulators are reviewing it.

Who owns what

Integration is Salesforce’s job. Your contract terms are yours.

In a Salesforce estate the decision touches three layers. Data 360 holds the unified profile, Marketing Cloud runs email and journeys, and Agentforce is where Salesforce says Braze decisioning will meet customer context (vendor). If you run Braze beside Salesforce today, the join is integration your team or a partner built: contact and consent sync, app events, and suppression lists. Nothing published says what happens to it. Map it now, while it is still yours to change.

Commercial decision: a long renewal at today’s discount, or a short one that keeps your options open until the roadmap lands. On this evidence, take the short one.

Monday morning

  1. Step 1. List every contract. Marketing Cloud, Braze, and any Data 360 or personalisation add-on, with renewal date and term. Owner: marketing operations.
  2. Step 2. Flag renewals before 31 January 2028. For each, ask for 12 months or less, a renewal price cap, and a right to revisit terms at close. Owner: procurement, with legal.
  3. Step 3. Freeze re-platforming between the two. No migration from Braze to Marketing Cloud, or back, until a combined roadmap publishes. Owner: CMO.
  4. Step 4. Map the join. Where profile, consent, and suppression live, and what syncs between Braze and Salesforce today. Owner: Salesforce architect.
  5. Step 5. Put the Missing list to your account team in writing. Date the reply and file it with the contract. Owner: Marketing Cloud owner.

We move this to PILOT when Salesforce publishes a combined roadmap with packaging for existing Marketing Cloud customers.

Frequently asked questions

When will the Salesforce and Braze deal close?

Salesforce says during its fiscal 2028, which runs from 1 February 2027 to 31 January 2028, subject to Braze shareholder approval and regulatory approvals. From 21 October 2026 that is 103 to 467 days. Braze operates independently until then.

Should a Marketing Cloud customer move to Braze, or a Braze customer to Marketing Cloud, now?

No. There is no combined roadmap, packaging, or pricing yet, so a migration started now could be undone by whatever Salesforce announces at close. Map the integration and keep renewals short instead.

Does the deal change Salesforce pricing or guidance?

Salesforce says its fiscal 2027 guidance does not change and it has not given fiscal 2028 guidance. It has said nothing about Marketing Cloud or Braze pricing.
