What happened
On 28 October OpenAI and ServiceNow expanded the partnership they signed in January. ServiceNow’s release says “the ServiceNow MCP plugin is available in the OpenAI marketplace today”, with enhanced capabilities expected by the end of 2026 and richer interactive extensions in preview. ChatGPT supplies the reasoning; “ServiceNow remains the system where those actions are executed and governed” (vendor, ServiceNow release).
Everything else carries a 2027 date in the same release:
| Piece | Status | Label |
|---|---|---|
| ServiceNow MCP plugin for ChatGPT | Available 28 Oct 2026 | vendor |
| Enhanced plugin capabilities | Expected by end of 2026 | vendor |
| Voice in Super Intelligence Control Tower | Expected Q1 2027 | vendor |
| OpenAI-powered security product | Early access Jan 2027, GA Q2 2027 | vendor |
| Codex in AI Workflow Factory | Expected in 2027 | vendor |
Forkast’s read of both releases lists the same split and notes that neither names a price, tier, or per-seat cost (independent, Forkast).
Why it matters, and to whom
For a CIO or ServiceNow platform owner, this quarter’s decision is narrow: which ServiceNow actions ChatGPT may take, and for whom. The 2027 items are roadmap and the release labels them forward-looking. They belong in a planning note, not a budget line.
The plugin is not the first agent route into ServiceNow. Action Fabric’s MCP Server has been generally available since 5 May 2026, with Anthropic as its first design partner, AI Control Tower governance, managed OAuth, audit trails, and role-based tool packages. ServiceNow says it is included in every Now Assist and AI Native SKU and that headless actions draw from the same Assist currency as Now Assist (vendor, ServiceNow, May 2026).
That is the non-obvious part. If ChatGPT actions are metered the same way, an employee clicking through a ChatGPT conversation spends your ServiceNow Assist allowance, not only your OpenAI seats. Neither October release says whether they are.
What to decide this quarter
- Step 1. Choose the exposed actions before anyone installs the plugin. Start with read and low-risk request actions, using role-based tool packages. Owner: ServiceNow platform owner.
- Step 2. Get the metering in writing. Ask ServiceNow whether ChatGPT-initiated actions consume Assist currency, and at what rate. Owner: procurement.
- Step 3. Keep 2027 out of this year’s business case. Plan voice, security, and Codex only when each has a general availability date. Owner: CIO.
Missing
- A price for the ChatGPT integration, from either company.
- Whether ChatGPT-initiated actions draw from ServiceNow’s Assist currency.
- Which ChatGPT plans can install the plugin.
- A general availability date for Codex in AI Workflow Factory beyond “2027”.
Frequently asked questions
What can ServiceNow customers use from the OpenAI deal today?
The ServiceNow MCP plugin in OpenAI’s marketplace, which lets ChatGPT take actions in your ServiceNow instance under ServiceNow’s own business rules and permissions. Enhanced plugin capabilities are expected by the end of 2026.
When do Codex, voice, and the security product arrive?
ServiceNow’s release says voice in Super Intelligence Control Tower is expected in the first quarter of 2027, the OpenAI-powered security product enters early access in January 2027 with general availability in the second quarter, and Codex in AI Workflow Factory is expected in 2027. All are forward-looking.
What does the ChatGPT integration cost?
Neither company has published a price. ServiceNow’s May 2026 release says headless actions through its MCP Server draw from the Assist currency in Now Assist SKUs. The October releases do not say whether ChatGPT-initiated actions are billed the same way, so ask ServiceNow in writing.
